Families Are Forever

Katie passed away this morning at home.

It is a sad day, but it is also a hopeful day because we know that

Families Are Forever

and that Katie will be with her sweet family again.

I found these pictures of Dennis and Katie's family on her blog. They were taken in July 2009.

My Aunt Katie

My Aunt Katie is dying of cancer.

She is a wife and a mother of six beautiful children, and she is only 3 years older than me.

I don't know why life is as it is, but I do know that God knows and that He is in charge of everything.

One of Katie's friends is putting a memory book together for her. Here is what I wrote on my page.

Krafty. I know that’s not how you spell crafty, but I couldn’t write this without mentioning how creatively talented Katie is. Her stationery is beautiful and I’ve loved seeing her projects on her blog, whether it’s to decorate the house or clothe her kids.

Awesome mom. I’ve always been impressed with what a patient mom Katie is. I can barely keep up with 3 kids. I don’t know how she does it so beautifully with six! I love how she and Dennis encourage their children to develop their talents and then support them in everything,

Terrific wife. I know Katie loves Dennis so much. I love seeing them kiss or hug each other. I didn’t meet my Aunt Katie until after I got home from my mission, but I remember being “introduced” to her on a tape that my family had sent to me. Dennis and Katie were so loving to each other on the tape.

Inspirational. I am so inspired by how courageously Katie has taken on cancer in these last 3 years. I know she has really struggled with so many things, but I love that she has shared those struggles so candidly on her blog. My own testimony of God’s love and tender mercies has grown so much thanks to her.

Example. As I mentioned before, I didn’t actually meet Katie until after I returned from my mission. But Katie was a big example to me because she herself had served a mission. When things got really tough on my mission I would think about Katie and how she had “survived.” I knew I could make it too—just like she did. I will think of Katie often once she has completed her mission here on earth. If she can make it, I can too!

I love you, Katie!

A Day in Our Life

Occasionally I come across a blog entry where someone has posted how they spent their day. I enjoy reading those so I figured I'd capture a somewhat typical day at our house. At least it's typical for right now. It's not typical for any other period in my life or how things will be in the coming months as the girls grow and change.

6:30-ish I'm up!

6:40 I do data entry for my dad to earn a little extra moola! It's pretty much the only time I have to myself.

8:00 I'm in the shower while Darrell is still home so he can attend to a need if needed

8:27 All of the kiddies hanging out on our bed while Tyler watches "Curious George" and/or "The Cat in the Hat Knows A Lot About That" on PBS.

8:51 All dressed (It never ceases to amaze me how long it takes to get 3 kids dressed and fed!)

8:58 Feeding the girls

9:33 Breakfast for Tyler and me while the girls hang out in their bouncers

9:53 I'm unloading/loading the dishwasher while Tyler watches Dora. Emily's in the Bumbo and Megan's in the bouncer

10:08 Megan has a blow out

11:15 Both girls are napping at the same time. Sometimes they nap at the same time which is nice because I'm hands free for a little while, but then it's tricky when they both need me at once after their naps. Usually they nap at different times which means I get one on one time with each.

11:19 OxiClean to the rescue. This is 2 days' worth of blowouts

11:40 On this particular day I'm trying to go through the ads from Sunday's paper. (I won't finish this "project" until much later in the day due to a few interruptions.)

12:06 lunch for Tyler and me

12:40 Books before Tyler's nap. He loves for us to read "In a People House," a book from my childhood that I loved as well. (Thank goodness he no longer calls it "Poo Poo House.") I also try to read a story from the New Testament (nap time) and/or the Book of Mormon (bedtime) reader each day. On this day both of the girls were awake and joined us for story time. They hung out on the floor while Tyler had my lap all to himself. (Some days he has to share.)

1:24 Laundry. I do a lot of it each week, but I'm so grateful for our new washer and dryer. Our old dryer took forever to dry. I had to divide each washer load into 2 dryer loads. Not anymore!

1:27 Checking on Tyler who is NOT going to sleep. (He still takes naps in a crib because he thinks "watch-me-get-out-of-the-big-bed-and-have-Mom-chase-me-around-to-put-me-back-in" is the funnest game EVER! Thank goodness he doesn't do that at night. He's very good about staying in bed then. Knock on wood!)

1:30 I attempt to read my scriptures while the girls watch Baby Einstein in their bouncers. I shoot for 30 minutes of scripture study each day, but it doesn't always happen. If I can get at least a little bit in during the day I always feel better--I really need that spiritual boost. I try to finish up studying at night when the kids are in bed.

1:40 I put Emily in the Exersaucer because she's bored in the bouncer. (It is tricky to keep rotating the girls between our "baby accessories" like the swings, the bouncers, the Bumbos, the exersaucer, the jumpers, the floor and me to keep them entertained so I can get some things done.)

1:45 Tyler won't settle down so I head upstairs to rock my little guy to sleep. It doesn't happen often that he needs to be rocked, but I can't pass up these opportunities because they'll be gone all too quickly.

2:33 Checking blogs, e-mail and Facebook. It's my little bit of "escape" into adult life.

3:27 Tyler's up and we go get the mail.

4:25 Snack time

5:35 Dinner. This night was left overs. (Yay, cuz that's one less thing to try and do without being interrupted.)

7:00 On this particular night Tyler and I went to WalMart while Darrell watched Emily and Megan. I can take all 3 kids with me to run errands, but I rarely do because it takes A LOT if time and energy to load everyone up, drive to the store, get everyone out of the van and into 2 shopping carts, pull one cart and push the other one at the store, load everyone back into the van, only to have to unload them AGAIN when we get home.

Three days a week Darrell watches all 3 kids while I go workout. That time away is SO welcome and SO needed--for my physical and mental health.

8:30 Two clean girls who will soon be on their way to bed. This night their baths were a little later than usual because of my trip to WalMart.

9:42 Tyler is clean and having his snack. Yes, the boy goes to bed WAY too late, but it has its good points too. Darrell spends a lot of time with Tyler when he gets home from work (which is around 6:20 or so). It is so nice for both Tyler and me. Darrell plays with him, bathes him and gets him a snack. Those are 3 less things I have to do at the end of the day, and besides, a late bedtime means Tyler sleeps in later in the morning so I have a little more "me time." I do try to have Tyler in bed by 9:00 each night, but sometimes I have no energy to make it all happen.

10:30 I try to be in bed between 10:00 and 10:30 because I am so exhausted. The girls are mostly sleeping all through the night now so I can get a good night's sleep to take on another day.

So that's basically our day, although there are never 2 days the same. Add in several feedings for the girls and lots of diaper changes for 3 little bums and you get the general idea. Sometimes the days are LONG, but the weeks and months go by so quickly. I'm so grateful for these 3 little miracles in our lives. I wouldn't have it any other way.

I'm not sure who gets more excited about these jumpers, Tyler or the girls.

Thanks to all who entered the drawing. Darrell was the official "drawer," so if you have any complaints, you can take them up with him. (Ha! Ha!)

Happy Halloween!

Because we live in a community where a majority of the people try to honor the Sabbath Day, we have already had our Halloween celebrations, even though today (Sunday) is Halloween. Here's a look at what we did to celebrate this holiday.

Friday morning found me trying to carve a pumpkin while watching 3 kids. It took me a lot longer to do than planned because there were a few interruptions, but Tyler liked the final result, even if it is pretty plain.

Also on Friday, Darrell's work let the employees' children go in and trick-or-treat.

Tyler had a ball. He ran around helping himself to more than one piece of candy if he could get away with it. We borrowed his cousins' bee costume and he loved wearing it. (I was kind of worried after his "aversion" to his costume last year.)

He even had a stinger on back.

Tyler's favorite treat was the Tootsie Rolls. He held on to several at once and wouldn't put them in his pumpkin basket.

The girls were little fairies. (The wings are on upside down because it was easier to carry them with the smaller wings on top and not having them hitting Darrell or me in the face.)

Megan enjoyed sucking on her skirt.

Later that night we went to the church for a chili and pie dinner. Tyler ran around amusing everyone with his costume, and the girls enjoyed being held by whoever would take them. (I actually got to eat a meal with 2 free hands!!)

Darrell took Tyler out trick-or-treating last night while I stayed home with the girls and handed out candy. Unfortunately it was rainy, but Tyler didn't care one bit.

Yep, there's another Tootsie Roll in his hand!
